Scholarships and Awards

Department of Biology Scholarships

  • The Frederick Munz Biology Scholarship (four scholarships of $5,000 each)
  • The William Sistrom Biology Scholarship (four scholarships of $5,000 each)
  • The George Streisinger Biology Scholarship (four scholarships of $5,000 each)
  • The Rod Capaldi Biology Scholarship (four scholarships of $5,000 each)
  • The John Postlethwait Biology Scholarship (four scholarships of $5,000 each)

Each of the above listed scholarship awards may be used to assist with expenses related to attending the university, including but not limited to tuition, fees, books, miscellaneous supplies, room and board. Awards will be distributed over the course of three terms (fall 2024, winter 2025, spring 2025)

Eligibility: All Biology majors enrolled in the 2024-2025 school year who show overall quality of academic work and who need financial assistance are eligible to apply. Students must qualify for financial need which is determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Preference will be given to students who are US citizens or permanent residents.

How to apply:

Only one application is needed for consideration for all twenty scholarships.

  • One page statement describing yourself and how a scholarship award will impact your UO educational experience
  • Academic transcripts (unofficial acceptable)

Frank and Stephanie Huestis McLean Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Biology majors enrolled in the 2024-2025 school year with a class standing of sophomore, junior or senior.

Award: up to $1,000

How to apply:

  • Applicant’s full name, UO identification number, mailing address and email address
  • One-page statement
  • Academic transcripts (unofficial acceptable)
  • Letter of support from research adviser

This scholarship award may be used to assist with expenses related to attending the university, including but not limited to tuition, fees, books, room and board. Awards will be allocated for fall 2024. Applicants who have won this award in the past are not eligible to apply again.

Paul and Helen Weiser Memorial Scholarship

Eligibility: Undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in the 2024-2025 school year who achieved academic excellence, who are in substantial need of financial assistance, and who show promise for worthwhile achievement in later life. Students must qualify for financial need which is determined by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

There is no US citizenship requirement for this award.

International students who would like to be considered should fill out the Financial Resource Form and submit it to the Office of International Affairs. This is what the Financial Aid office uses in place of a FAFSA.

Award: up to $3,000

  • Brief statement of need
  • Academic transcripts (unofficial acceptable)
  • Letter of support from research adviser

This award is a one-year unrestricted award and may be used for tuition, fees, stipend, books, etc. Awards will be allocated for fall 2024. Applicants who have won this award in the past are not eligible to apply again.

David T. Moat and Alice C. Moat Scholarship

Eligibility: Undergraduate students enrolled as majors in the Department of Biology who show overall quality of academic work and achievement. Must be enrolled in the 2024-2025 school year. Preference shall be given to students studying in the field of molecular biology. Awards will be allocated for fall 2024.

Award: up to $3,800

How to apply:

  • One page statement
  • Academic transcripts (unofficial acceptable)
  • Letter of support from research adviser
