MATHEMATICS - Stephanie van Willigenburg, professor of mathematics at the University of British Columbia and winner of the 2023 David P. Robbins Prize will visit the University of Oregon campus April 10-11 to discuss both graph theory and why mathematics is for everyone who has a passion for it as part of the UO Association for Women in Mathematics Distinguished Speaker Series. 



MATHEMATICS - The 2025 Niven Lectures will bring in Matthew Baker, a professor of mathematics—and magician—from the Georgia Institute of Technology. The two lectures—Tuesday, April 8 and Wednesday, April 9—will be at 220 Chapman Hall. The lectures will cover the mathematical principles in card shuffling magic and group structures on spanning trees and generalizations.

MATHEMATICS - Mathematical algorithms can help art conservators identify minute blemishes in an artwork and create digital maps to guide their restoration efforts. Award-winning mathematician Ingrid Daubechies from Duke University will share some of these techniques on March 6 in a public talk hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences Mathematics Department.

MATHEMATICS, PHYSICS - Miles from any other humans, Katie Linnenkohl and Owen Mitchem—both undergrads majoring in physics—trudge up a darkening path toward the hemispherical structure atop Pine Mountain near Bend, where they’ll spend the night scouring the sky for signs of a world around another star. Their mission: Capture evidence of a suspected planet lurking within the constellation Cassiopeia.

CINEMA STUDIES, MATHEMATICS - Abby Lewis, a fourth-year mathematics and cinema studies major, hopes to address the divide between mathematics vs. arts students in her second children’s book, Moose and the Math Fairy, earlier this year. “Math is in patterns, and it’s all around us in the world," Lewis said.

MATHEMATICS - Jaida Ross and Klaudia Kazimierska have earned spots on the 2023-24 College Sports Communications (CSC) Academic All-America Team. Kazimierska, who is majoring in mathematics, was voted to the second team. She's representing Poland at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris in the 1500-meter track and field event.

Three College of Arts and Sciences researchers have received the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious honor for early-career faculty members in the past year: Luca Mazzucato (biology, mathematics and physics), Brittany Erickson (computer science and earth sciences) and Julia Widom (chemistry). Known as the CAREER Awards, the organization recognizes and fosters rising stars by funding innovative research.

GLOBAL HEALTH, GLOBAL STUDIES, MULTIDISCIPLINARY SCIENCE, PHYSICS - Where can a liberal arts degree take you? These College of Arts and Sciences seniors are charting their own course as they pursue careers in the specialty coffee industry, particle physics and public service.

MATHEMATICS - The online publication 3 Quarks Daily features PhD student Samantha Platt and Professor Ellen Eischen's recent talk about Gaussian Periods.

MATHEMATICS - Why did we all have to learn the quadratic formula in middle school? Is learning how to find the roots of a polynomial actually useful? Professor Benson Farb from the University of Chicago will answer those questions during the Department of Mathematics' 2024 Niven Lecture at 4 p.m. Monday, May 20, in 110 Fenton Hall. Farb will present a second lecture on "Rigidity of moduli spaces and algebro-geometric constructions" May 21 at 4 p.m. 110 Fenton Hall

MATHEMATICS - Toys and the Pixar production company are the focus of two events hosted by the Department of Mathematics. Tadashi Tokieda, a professor of mathematics at Stanford University, speaks as part of a lecture series on Friday, May 10, in Fenton Hall, Room 110.

COMPUTER SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, PSYCHOLOGY - Success at the University of Oregon looks different for each student, from academic achievement to personal growth to career readiness.

MATHEMATICS - KEZI featured the fifth annual Eugene Youth Math Festival at McArthur Court. “Our goal is to inspire kids to learn more math by presenting them with a lot of different math-related activities, games, and experiments and see the beauty of it,” said Maria Nemirovskaya of the Department of Mathematics. “It's not just number crunching but that there's a lot behind actual math.”

MATHEMATICS - Children in the Eugene-Springfield area will have the opportunity to explore games, problem-solving activities, crafts and other hands-on math activities at the Eugene Youth Math Festival in McArthur Court Saturday, Feb. 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

MATHEMATICS - Professor Emeritus Gary Seitz passed away on Oct. 30, 2023. For 35 years, Seitz was a faculty member of the Department of Mathematics, serving as the department head at times and later as associate dean of the Division of Natural Sciences and publishing research.
