Hannah Larson, an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley, will visit the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Mathematics on May 7 and 8, and give two talks as part of the Association for Women in Mathematics’ Distinguished Speaker series.
On Thursday, May 7, Larson will deliver a presentation on Lines in Algebraic Geometry from 4-5 pm at Tykeson 260. On Friday, May 8, she will speak on Moduli Spaces of Curves from 1-2 pm at Tykeson 260.
As a mathematician, Larson has applied techniques of degeneration and intersection theory. Larson’s research focuses on algebraic geometry, including topics such as moduli spaces, intersection theory, and Brill-Noether theory.
The Clay Mathematics Institutes lauds her work as a significant advance in one of the classical areas of algebraic geometry and that her research has addressed classical problems with “surprising new ideas.”
Larson received her PhD in 2022 from Stanford where her work won the Hertz Thesis prize. She has received numerous rewards for her math, such as the 2024 Miriam Mirzakhani New Frontier's prize and has been named a Clay Research Fellow (2022-2027). Larson is also a Eugene native and has had connections to the University of Oregon Department of Mathematics.
