Research is embedded in the Materials Science and Technology program, beginning with our research immersion course, which will prepare you to work in one of the many Physics and Chemistry labs across campus. MSTC majors build R&D-relevant skills through hands-on activities right from the start through the MSTC foundation coursework:
- Experimental skills through Chemistry and Physics lab course sequences
- Modern programming languages for materials data analysis and modeling through projects in the Fundamentals of Materials in Technology sequence (MSTC 231/232)
- A newly developed Research Immersion course (CH 329) that pairs MSTC undergraduates with graduate students doing research in labs across UO, providing training in how to develop a research hypothesis and formulate and execute a plan of research to test it
Opportunities to develop research skills through experiential learning continue through the upper-level coursework in the MSTC program, including:
- Advanced lab courses in diverse areas such as electronics, data science, and organic and inorganic chemistry
- Programming and data analysis projects in the advanced materials science course sequences (MSTC 431/432 and MSTC 441/442)
- Open-ended materials science and technology projects in the Advanced Projects Lab (PHYS 491/492/493)
Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program
The Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) encourages and supports undergraduate research and creative scholarship across all academic disciplines. Seek out faculty mentors, find guidance to help you get started, and discover resources for funding your own research.
Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement
The Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement (CURE) serves as a campus hub for undergraduate students to pursue advanced learning opportunities in research, scholarship, and creative endeavors. CURE offers funding support for research and experiential learning and creates opportunities for students to showcase their research.
Affiliated Students for Undergraduate Research and Engagement
The Affiliated Students for Undergraduate Research and Engagement (ASURE) is a student group that helps connect students with research in every discipline happening at the University of Oregon. It provides workshops, classroom visits, and advice to students interested in getting involved in research.
