Why Study Materials Science?

Materials are the functional components of modern technology, from electrodes for rechargeable batteries to insulators for quantum computers. Materials scientists invent new materials and study the connections between the underlying atomic and molecular structure of a material, its properties, its processing methods, and its performance in applications. Internationally, materials scientists work alongside engineers and basic scientists on some of the most pressing societal issues, such as clean energy production and storage.
