Some labs on campus finding a sustainable path, thanks to new program
CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY - UO lab spaces are some of the most resource-intensive areas on campus, using two to three times more energy than typical offices and generating unique kinds of waste that aren’t collected through regular recycling streams. The recently launched Sustainable Labs program offers researchers a flexible framework to foster more sustainability in labs.

Summer workshop sparks inclusive teaching across UO science courses
During the summer, 25 faculty members from the college’s Division of Natural Sciences took part in the Mobile Summer Institute for Scientific Teaching. The weeklong workshop offered faculty members ways to transform traditional lectures to be more inclusive and hands on that puts students at the center of learning. It brought together instructors not only from disciplines such as biology, chemistry, and physics—and across the campus.

2025 Graduate Student Awards for Excellence in the Teaching of Chemistry
CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY - Sylvia Kennerly, Marie Kerns, Natalie Lakanen, Keyan Li, Rohan Myers, and Dario Nunez have been named recipients of the 2025 Chemistry and Biochemistry Graduate Student Teaching Awards. The award recognizes graduate student educators that have greatly exceeded the normal expectations of a Teaching Assistant, and their important contributions to the instructional mission of the department.

Audrey Klein selected for 2025 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Award
CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY - UO Chemistry graduate student Audrey Klein has been selected to receive a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.  The fellowship provides three years of support for graduate students who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education.

CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY, PHYSICS - A University of Oregon graduate student has developed a new mathematical equation that significantly improves the accuracy of the simplified computer models used to study the motion and behavior of large molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids and synthetic materials such as plastics.

CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY - After serving four years as undersecretary for science and innovation at the U.S. Department of Energy, College of Arts and Sciences chemistry professor Geraldine “Geri” Richmond is back at the University of Oregon. Richmond was one of the top science officers in the federal government, overseeing billions of dollars in research spending on some of the nation’s highest science priorities, including quantum computing, clean energy and national security.

NSF Grant Awarded for State-of-the-Art Scientific Tool

CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY – An interdisciplinary team led by chemist Matthias Agne has secured an NSF grant for a cryogen-free, state-of-the-art MRI Physical Property Measurement tool that will enable next-generation energy and quantum materials research and education at the University of Oregon.
