Students at UO who are interested in declaring a Materials Science and Technology major must complete the following steps.
Step 1: Complete the foundation coursework for the MSTC major.
Step 2: Apply for admission into the MSTC program. In the term that you complete your foundation courses, you will be asked to submit an application that includes the following components:
- Academic transcripts
- Choice of emphasis (physics or chemistry)
- Research/industry area of interest
There are two routes to admission to the program:
- Guaranteed admission: Students with a GPA of 3.0 or better in the foundation courses are automatically admitted to the program.
- Additional review: Students who do not meet the GPA requirement can petition for admission through additional review if they have a strong academic record that demonstrates steady progress towards acquiring the quantitative and critical thinking skills necessary for success in the program. In addition to the materials listed above, students will be asked to provide a CV, short essays in response to prompts, and references from 1-2 instructors in the foundation courses. Applications will be evaluated by a three-member committee with members drawn from both Chemistry and Physics faculty.
