The University of Oregon Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers a placement assessment to help students decide which introductory course is right for them.

IMPORTANT: Students may not double-major or minor in both Chemistry and Biochemistry, nor declare any combination of majors and minors from our department (e.g., a Biochemistry major with a Chemistry minor).

Chemistry Major Requirements

Grade Requirement: All courses required for the Chemistry major must be graded and passed with a grade of C- or better (CH, MATH, PHYS courses).

Core Chemistry Courses:

Advanced Electives:

  • Option 1) Three approved upper-division courses
  • Option 2) One approved upper-division course + six credits of research (CH 401)
  • Option 3) Nine credits of research (CH 401)

In addition to the approved advanced elective courses for the Chemistry degree, students can submit courses for consideration and approval to count towards their advanced elective degree requirements. Students should contact Faculty Advisor Mike Koscho to see if a course they are considering (or a transfer course credit) might be appropriate to count as an advanced elective.

In addition to the courses listed above, the UO Core Education Requirements must be satisfied (either by taking sufficient Writing, Cultural Literacy, Arts & Letters, and Social Science classes or completing the R. D. Clark Honors College requirements).

Biochemistry Major Requirements

  • Option 1) One term of a 400-level chemistry lab course
  • Option 2) At least one year (6 cr) of undergraduate research (written report required)

Advanced Biochemistry Electives:*

Select two from CH 464, 465, 466, 468

Other Advanced Electives:*
