Graduate Admissions

Admission to the Mathematics Department at the University of Oregon is a competitive process. In a typical year, we admit 10-15 new students to the doctoral degree program, all of whom are supported by Graduate Employee positions that carry a stipend, full tuition waiver, and health insurance. We only accept applications to the doctoral degree program.

Eligibility Requirements

If you are applying to begin our PhD program in the fall of 2025, all of your materials must be received by the application deadline of January 15, 2025.

To be considered for admission, you must have a bachelor’s degree or expect to attain one by the end of summer 2025. Math subject GRE scores are recommended but not required—the University of Oregon’s Institution Code is 4846.

If you are not a native speaker of English, you must provide proof English language proficiency. This can be demonstrated in any of three ways:

  • TOEFL internet-based test: score of 100 or better, with at least 26 on the speaking section.
  • IELTS exam: overall band score of 7.0 or better, with at least 7.0 on the speaking band.
  • Degree from an accredited U.S. institution or from an institution in the following countries: Australia, Canada (excluding Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom.

It is sometimes possible to make an exception for an applicant who narrowly misses one of these benchmarks. However, any offer of financial support for such an applicant would be contingent on receiving a satisfactory score on the SPEAK test upon arrival in Eugene. For more details, see the English language policy for graduate employees.

The ideal candidate for the graduate degree program in mathematics would have:

  • Grades of at least 3.5 (A-/B+) in most of your mathematics courses.
  • A bachelor’s degree with a major in math or at least one year of upper-division mathematics courses. (A math major is standard but not required.)
  • Thorough familiarity with basic analysis and abstract linear algebra, along with some exposure to more advanced topics.

International students are strongly encouraged to apply!

Required Application Materials

Your application should include:

  • Three recommendation letters. You’ll need the names and email addresses of three people who will write your recommendation letters. Letter writers will submit their recommendations directly through the online system.
  • PDFs of transcripts from all colleges you have attended. You must send official transcripts from every post-secondary institution from which you have earned a degree. Mail to: Office of the Registrar, 5257 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR 97403. Note: If your degree is still in progress, you do not need to send the official transcript. If you are admitted, you will be required to submit the official transcript once the degree is conferred. For more information about official transcripts, please visit the Graduate School’s page.
  • Statement of purpose
  • Application fee of $70.00 for domestic students or $90.00 for international students

Note: Before you pay the fee, you will be able to edit and update your application. Once you pay the fee, you will no longer be able to edit the application, but you can communicate any important changes by email asu8@uoregon.edu.

Information on application fee waivers can be found on the Graduate School’s page.
