Renown mathematician speaks at 2026 Moursund Lectures

MATHEMATICS - The Department of Mathematics hosts Victor Reiner for its 2026 Moursund Lectures. Morsund is a Distinguished McKnight Professor in Mathematics at the University of Minnesota. The series of three lectures is 4-5 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at 128 Chiles Hall, 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, at 125 McKenzie Hall and 1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 4 at 245 Straub Hall.

Summer workshop sparks inclusive teaching across UO science courses

During the summer, 25 faculty members from the college’s Division of Natural Sciences took part in the Mobile Summer Institute for Scientific Teaching. The weeklong workshop offered faculty members ways to transform traditional lectures to be more inclusive and hands on that puts students at the center of learning. It brought together instructors not only from disciplines such as biology, chemistry, and physics—and across the campus.

Upcoming functional analysis conference to inspire, spark ideas around the world

MATHEMATICS - The University of Oregon will be home to the Functional Analysis in the Pacific Northwest conference, Nov. 8-11. The four-day event aims to bring together a diverse field of mathematicians from around the world and foster an environment for collaboration and exchange of ideas, as well as celebrate influential functional analysis expert William B. Johnson.

Award-winning mathematician to discuss graph theory and women in math

MATHEMATICS - Stephanie van Willigenburg, professor of mathematics at the University of British Columbia and winner of the 2023 David P. Robbins Prize will visit the University of Oregon campus April 10-11 to discuss both graph theory and why mathematics is for everyone who has a passion for it as part of the UO Association for Women in Mathematics Distinguished Speaker Series.

Visiting mathematician to share how algorithms help restore artwork

MATHEMATICS - Mathematical algorithms can help art conservators identify minute blemishes in an artwork and create digital maps to guide their restoration efforts. Award-winning mathematician Ingrid Daubechies from Duke University will share some of these techniques on March 6 in a public talk hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences Mathematics Department.
